Solar Water Pump Systems

A solar-powered water pumping system efficiently converts sunlight into electricity through photovoltaic (PV) panels. The generated DC power operates motor-driven pumps that draw water from various sources for irrigation. These systems are cost-effective, eco-friendly, and ensure consistent water supply without dependency on conventional electricity.

Working Mechanism

  1. Solar Energy Conversion: PV panels capture sunlight and convert it into DC electricity.

  2. Power Regulation: A control box manages power flow and safeguards the motor.

  3. Water Extraction: Pumps draw water from ponds, wells, or canals.

  4. Efficient Operation: Linear Current Boosters extend pumping hours during low sunlight.

  5. Sustainable Storage: Water is stored in tanks, eliminating battery dependency.

Types of Solar Water Pumps

Submersible Solar Water Pumps

Such water pumping systems lift up to 650 feet and fit in a 4″ or larger well casing and are used when the water supply is more than 20 feet from the surface. If the water level is lower than 20 feet and the solar pump will need to lift more than that, a submersible solar pump will work great and can lift vertical distances of up to 700 feet.

They can operate directly off solar panels, batteries, or in some cases, an AC power source.

Types of Solar Water Pumps

Surface Solar Water Pumps

such water pumps are good for applications with shallow wells, ponds, streams or storage tanks. They are best if the water supply is 20 feet or less from the surface area.

Surface solar pumps can use suction to draw water vertically about 10-20 feet. However, once they have lifted, relatively smaller pumps can then push water to great distances, like 200 feet or more!

Solar Water Pumps

Unpredictability of rains & long and continuous power cuts have been the major cause of water crisis for farmers and those in the agriculture sector. And spiraling fuel cost adds to the problems in the rural and remote areas as running water pumps on diesel generators to irrigate fields increase the operational cost. Solar power water pumps just provide the right solution to all the water-related problems in rural regions and how?

The low-maintenance, cost-effective solar power water pumps are just the perfect alternatives for electric water pump sets as they reduce dependency on fuel-burning generators and grid-supply, thus boosting productivity and saving time and money at the same time.

We provide a wide array of low-cost solar pumps to support multiple applications such as potable water supply for communities, livestock watering, field irrigation etc.

Our solar water pumping solutions have been time-tested and have delivered the best, cost-effective, durable results. With minimal maintenance and longer operating life, our water pumping solutions with par excellence have made us stand much ahead of our competitors.

Installation requirements

  • Solar PV panel for power generation
  • A pump unit attached to a motor – including any of the following pump set –
  • Floating pump set
  • Submersible pump set
  • Pipes
  • The water pumping system should be installed in the area of maximum sunlight

How it Works

Solar-powered water pumping system operates on electricity generated by solar cells or photovoltaic (PV) cells in solar panels. When exposed to sunlight, these solar PV panels transform solar energy into direct current (DC) electricity. The DC power flows into a control box which manages the electricity, which is utilized to operate motor pump sets. The control box also protects the motor for voltage fluctuations.

1. The water pumping system then draws water from other water bodies like pond, canal, open well, bore well to irrigate fields.

2. Most solar water pumps run directly off solar panels (PV direct) and do not require batteries. Using batteries may complicate an otherwise straight forward application. Instead of storing electricity in batteries, it is preferred to store water in a holding tank.

3. Linear current boosters for Solar Pumps (LCBs) allow the pump motor to run longer during the day by translating additional voltage to necessary current during periods of low sun.

Why Budding Leaf for Solar Power Systems?

Frequently Asked Questions

The cost of solar powered pump depends on the type and capacity of the solar pumping systems. A 5 HP (horsepower) AC solar water pump costs approximately Rs. 4.5 to Rs 5 lakh, while A 5HP DC solar water pump can cost more than 5 lakhs. Price of 3 HP AC solar water pump stands at approximately Rs 3 lakhs and more, while a DC solar pumping system of same horsepower may cost upto Rs. 4 lakhs.

The government has launched various schemes to promote solar pumps, thus offering water security to farmers. As part of the scheme, as many as 17.50 lakh solar water pumps with up to 7.5 HP capacity will replace diesel-powered pumps. Also, the government through another scheme aims to replace 10 lakh grid-tied agricultural water pumps with solar pumps of capacity 7.5 HP by 2022.

Certain points should be kept in mind when choosing the location for solar panels and solar water pump sets. Solar panels should always be installed in an area free from shade and dust. To ensure that the solar panels should get maximum sunlight throughout the day they should be kept towards the N-S direction. The solar panel should be mounted on an even surface and as close to the pump and water body as possible. Panels should be installed such that it should get unrestricted tracking movement and should be accessible for cleaning.
Solar water pumps should be placed within the area to be irrigated. In case of multiple water bodies available, the source with highest water level should be chosen for placing the pump to allow easy water access.

Solar powered water pumps these days are unlikely to be damaged by rains or hail storms. In rare cases such as a lightning strike on the solar panel can cause considerable damage. This can be avoided by connecting an external lighting protection system to the solar panel.
A panel may also suffer damage during a cyclone or heavy storm if the mounted surface of the panel collapses owing to physical pressure by the winds. In locations prone to cyclones and storms, a strong building foundation for installing a fixed panel can help prevent the damage to the solar water heater. Additionally, the panel should be kept at a horizontal position of 180 degrees to minimize the resistance caused by the winds.
